Chairs That Speak- Exhibition at the Festival Of Upholstery
10th-11th October 2025, Sandhurst
An exhibition of two works from the chairs that speak collection.
Combining aspects of upholstery, carving and marquetry Layla creates intriguing sculptures on chairs, exploring the stories behind them. Inspired by stage sets, these artworks are made up of many layers, and each lays out clues to tell you a different story or convey an idea. Layla uses traditional upholstery techniques in creative and unusual ways to create the sculptural forms that are key to her work. She aims to explore how the stories behind pieces could be conveyed in more visual and exciting ways, combining storytelling and art with the curation of antiques.

"Whether carved, cast, bound, or knotted, captured in video or sound, or repurposed from pre-existing objects, each work suggests a relationship to the body – of how they might feel or fit against it."- Phoenix Gallery
